Join us for a FREE tour of Pu'u Wa'a Wa'a Ranch!

We invite you to experience the Blue Planet Energy Research Lab, an eye-opening and educational experience exploring the wonders of Henk Rogers’ ranch.

The Ranch operates on a Micro-Grid solar system providing sufficient power generation equivalent to sustaining ten homes. This system includes a state-of-the-art battery storage system and uses hydrogen as a secondary storage medium, allowing it to operate independently from the public utility grid. Additionally, there's a hydrogen fueling station for a Toyota Mirai, an electric vehicle that converts hydrogen into electricity.

If you would like to take part in the tour, please arrive promptly at 3 PM. The tour will begin between 3:30-3:45 PM. The ranch is at 2500 ft. elevation. Please wear comfortable shoes appropriate for walking through grass and dress for mauka weather as it can be chilly & wet.

Directions

Driving Instructions
From Kailua Kona: Take Palani to north on Mamalahoa Hwy (190) toward Waimea. As you get closer to Mile Marker #22, you will see houses in the background ahead on a ridge and a very large pu’u (cinder cone) in the distance on your right. Get ready to slow down and turn RIGHT into the driveway with a solar powered recessed metal gate. About 35 minute drive.

From Waimea, Waikoloa, or Hilo via Daniel K. Inouye Highway: Stay on Highway 190 going south. You will see Puu Lani Ranch subdivision access on your left. Soon after passing Pu’u Lani, you will be traveling down a hill, once at the bottom, be prepared to take the first left into the driveway of Pu’u Wa’awa’a access road with a solar powered recessed metal gate.

Upon Arrival
Come through the gate, which should open automatically. Drive straight. You will approach a Y on the road with a brown signboard and a tiny green corrugated roof structure on the left. Stay to your right and drive approximately two miles up on the paved road. You will come to an overhead sign, “Pu’u Wa’awa’a Ranch” over a cattle gap.  Pass the Energy Lab, which will be on your left (Do NOT park by the Energy Lab), and continue up the road to the first paved right turn. Head toward the left side of the open pavilion.  Park to the left of the pavilion, where there is an open grass area and not in the circle driveway.

Note: If the gate does not open, get out and manually open it then close it behind you (livestock inside). When leaving, pull up to the stop line in the center of the road, (it opens toward you). It is common to see livestock (including black Angus cattle), feral sheep, and pigs along the road, so go slow and be patient--especially after dark (use high beams).
