Kohala High School Wins Overall Excellence Award at TMT Big Island VEX Tournament

November 30, 2018
The exciting and well attended TMT Big Island VEX tournament was held recently and hosted by St Joseph School. Twenty robotic teams from Maui, Oahu and the Big Island competed against each other, playing 8 matches each.

It was an exciting day of competition and at the end of the day, scores were tallied up and awards were presented to the winning teams. The alliance of Kohala and Saint Louis High School captured the title of Tournament Champions. The TMT Big Island VEX Tournament Excellence Award was presented to Kohala High School VEX Robotics team, under the guidance and direction of Fern White, a long-time robotic program advocate and supporter.

Hawaii schools qualifying for state championships in January are Kohala High, Saint Louis High, Keaau High, and St. Joseph Middle.

TMT is honored to have supported this VEX tournament over the years. The creative designs and hard work of Hawaii robotic students are showcased at tournaments like this one. Looking back over the years of support, the knowledge, creativity and excitement shown by these students is an incredible reminder of the opportunities that come along with STEM-centered programs. Many past participants have gone on to great colleges and jobs including Jet Propulsion Laboratory and aerospace companies.

TMT's Mike Sheehan attended the recent TMT Big Island VEX tournament and proudly noted "There were many kids, some even at the middle school age that would have fit right into an undergraduate class in Engineering Mechanics that I taught when I was in Grad School."

TMT looks forward to continuing its support of STEM-centered programs.

Keep reaching for the stars!

About TMT
The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) Project has been developed as collaboration among Caltech, the University of California (UC), the Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy (ACURA), and the national institutes of Japan, China, and India with the goal to design, develop, construct, and operate a thirty-meter class telescope and observatory on Maunakea in cooperation with the University of Hawaii (TMT Project). The TMT International Observatory LLC (TIO), a non-profit organization, was established in May 2014 to carry out the construction and operation phases of the TMT Project. The Members of TIO are Caltech, UC, the National Institutes of Natural Sciences of Japan, the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Department of Science and Technology of India, and the National Research Council (Canada); the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) is a TIO Associate. Major funding has been provided by the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation.
