Stargazing and BBQ Fun at Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope AfterHours

NETWORKING—Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope guided AfterHours attendees to look up this month, treating Chamber members to a special stargazing experience. Guests also enjoyed tours of the observing room to remotely view the telescope on Maunakea.
Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce (KKCC) attendees savored the pupus prepared by the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope team, including freshly grilled salmon and kebabs, cheese plates, fresh fruits and vegetables and more. Everything was served on serving ware from Sustainable Island Products. Also on the menu was liquid aloha generously donated by Kona Brewing Company.
During the program, gracious hosts Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Executive Director Doug Simons and Outreach Program Manager Mary Beth Laychak invited everyone to enjoy the evening’s food, drinks and telescopes to view Saturn, Jupiter and the moon. Simons inspired the crowd, sharing the telescope will be celebrating its 40th anniversary next year. He also shared information about the Maunakea Scholars Program, which is entering its fourth year giving statewide high school students the opportunity to use the world’s biggest telescopes for their own personal research projects.
